As I gazed down at my colleague—thinking of all the future observations it would be possible to make from this position—I discerned a furtive movement in the darkness behind him. At first, I doubted my eyes and guessed it was the dancing of the flames that made it appear that I saw several sets of feet just behind where Baedecker stood.

But then the sets of feet moved closer—in horrible, shambling lockstep—and I knew that they were no illusion. A few steps more, and I perceived that my colleague was moments from being overtaken by a group of horrible, rotting zombies.
